The augmented reality application LAYAR operates on mobile phones and provides a means to work with augmented reality. Such applications can show where underground pipes and roads are within a city or rural area and they reveal personalized notations about locations,

Now users of this technology are able to use augmented reality to integrate and include older maps and cartographic products as The Verge points out – “….recently introduced a web service called Creator that allows print media designers to incorporate interactive web assets into publications. Creator doesn’t just embed QR codes — it can use the features of a magazine page as an anchor point and then overlay pictures, video, and buttons on iOS and Android devices inside the Layar app.”

Think about this – old historical maps can now be included with newer digital data or city planning simply by pointing the camera at the printed product. Wherever you go and see such products, suddenly makes their content within reach of you. This is powerful.  Much more than QR clodes alone.
